In honor of her recent birthday earlier this month (happy birthday month, mom-in-law!), I wanted to feature a throwback photo of Meg Jordan (Erin’s mom, later to be a Pickett), celebrating her birthday.
She thought this was likely age 10 — the big time “double digits!” — making it ~1967 and the approximate number of candles seems about right. I presume this was taken at the Pebble Brook House in Carmel.
From left to right that’s Walter, Cat, Scott, Meg, and Missie. 5 of the 8 kiddos. Meg the age-leader of this younger section. Meg is in full command of the cake-handling duties, but appears to be allowing the ladies to get that lick of frosting off the candles while holding back Scott’s eagerness to dive in; Walt seems bored but willing to partake.
It seems evening, a little reflection from the camera flash bounces off the oval mirror onto the front door. A piano topped by apparent cards/photos looms in the back.
It’s the late 60’s in Indiana — Lyndon Johnson is president — Vietnam is happening — Aretha Franklin’s “RESPECT” will come out THIS month and Elvis marries Priscilla next month — where else? in Vegas, baby!

I always liked that it was spring and everything was coming to life. My favorite birthday cake was angel food with frosting usually made by Grandma Margaret. We always got your favorite dinner. Mine was fried chicken with mashed potatoes & gravy and corn.
the favorite dinner tradition lives on in the Wise family! Your dinner sounds a lot like our 500 race KFC runs.
That is totally an Erin face. That birthday Meg got her very own bike. A pink Schwinn.
nice — wonder if it was a “Fair-Lady”?
