I enjoy the quality of these mid-century photographs — this black and white school portrait features my maternal uncle Jerry Chapman — well before he would enter into my family with a simple question upon a neighbor.
Handwriting on the back tells us this is his 1st grade photo, so after finding out he graduated high school in ’57, I presumed his academics were solid and walked back the years sequentially to arrive at 1945, around the time World War II would have ended.
He told me once that he didn’t do kindergarten, so this would have been his earliest school experience. I presume Lodi kids of them time did all of their school at the classic Lodi School building (which I would know in the 80’s to be the elementary, and where my maternal aunt, his wife, would work in the lunchroom).
- Was this taken at Lodi School? I believe Jerry went to school at Lodi School for 1st -12th grades.
- Does Jerry recall how it felt to be ending World War II in the USA as a young child?
