Great family photo of Howard “Hap” and Pearl Pickett (Erin’s paternal great grandparents) and their 5 boys together — you see that historically, female dominated litters were not always the trend! I wonder what it must have been like for Pearl to be surrounded by so much testosterone! Clifford “Pokey” is Erin’s paternal grandfather.
Identities here are as follows:
Based on age appearances I would estimate this was taken around end-of-wartime in 1945: would make Hap 40y, Pearl 42y; Kenny 19y, Clifford 17-18y, Bill 16y, Jackie 9y, Phil 5y —- as a clue, I noticed the apparent wedding band on Kenny’s ringfinger — he was married in July ’45.
As for location, Erin tells me that Hap and Pearl lived in this home off E 10th St in Sheridan — it’s hard to discern if this is the same location — the porch configuration would appear to be different — but this is 70+yrs ago.
I like Pearl’s appearance in this photo — she seems to have some spice and spunk. Erin was fortunate enough to know her well — and it wasn’t long before I heard stories about her “little grandma” which we’ll include in future posts.
Oh, and Hap must be standing up on a stool or box — we know he wasn’t that tall..
- Is the location correct?
- Any context or reason for why the photo was taken?
- How did World War II-time impact the Pickett family?
