What better start for a Jordan post, than to highlight the couple who commands a lot of the nostalgia and historical focus for our Indiana-based Jordan sect.
You can’t enter into the family, in my case, by acquiring life-long rights to romancing a Pickett girl — without hearing about the Jordans (my direct route being through my mother-in-law Meg). They surround you and they talk to you and they are eager and confident all around.
See, Joseph “Joe” Jordan (Erin’s maternal grandfather) was born in Indiana in 1923 — and would live quite the life — pharmacist, performer/entertainer, writer of the “official” Indy 500 song (you quickly find out) — but best of all, he would meet Martha “Marty” Jane Lunt, five years his junior, and they would marry on April 15 (tax day?! — NOPE, not until 1955!), 1950 — also the day before his birthday — which is where we find them in the feature photo here, stepping into this automobile, presumably to or from their wedding reception.
I have many, many photos of this couple that will roll out gradually over time — it would seem life was well enjoyed — and I look forward to gaining more insight about all their adventures with 8 children, including my mother in law.
This photo is a nice example where there is some object or structure that could be identified — presenting a puzzle to solve — in this case, the car. I started looking around ~1950 era interior car photos and I think this one matches up nicely with the 1947 Ford Super Deluxe — see if you agree (I’m not really a car knowledgable guy):
One remaining mystery here was location — I spent some time looking at historical downtown Indianapolis photos, but I couldn’t quite discern the street or intersection this would be.
I looked for clues in Marty’s scrapbook — and there you find the location for the wedding ceremony and reception:
The Spink-Arms Hotel is now the “Continental Towers” at 410 N Meridian St, Indianapolis, IN 46204; Looking around the area, my best guess is that the columned building and park area in the background is the Birch Bayh Federal Building and University Park area within a couple blocks on Meridian.
- Where was this photo taken within, I presume, Indianapolis?
- Any stories from the time around their marriage?
